Masterclass – Unfinished business with David Clarke

Course period:
Week 31
28 July – 2 August 2025
(OBS! The course will finish after breakfast on August 2)

Welcome to Unfinished Business

The world can feel constantly busy, as we rush about doing our day jobs and trying to multi-task. It’s a non-stop juggling act, hectic and at times out of balance. As a consequence it’s not always possible to find the time, energy or brain space to realise that good idea, refine that model, or develop a sketch. Unfinished Business offers you focused time and attention, so you can develop and refine your thinking and work.

Requirements
Sign up for Unfinished Business if you are a student or a professional in need of support and a push in the right direction to develop an existing object, 3D model or sketch. Whatever you bring along will be our starting point for all conversations, so please choose carefully and consider its context within your practice.

The Process
Over the course of 5 days we will take your starting point and concentrate on realising its full potential. We will work intensely together as a group, in pairs and individually as appropriate and decide what methods are best suited for your specific needs. The goal is to created a tailored experience that enables you to refine your thinking and realise your work in a way that it deserves.

Potential Outcomes
When you leave this workshop, the expectation is that you will have successfully advanced from your initial starting point and be closer to a tangible outcome. Your thinking and creative development will be advanced through discussion, and supported by model making, experimentation and test pieces. You will also have deepened your understanding of your artistic potential and developed an appreciation of the positive impact dedicated working time will have on your long-term creative practice

The course will start at 9.00 on Monday July 28 and finish with evaluation and cleaning after breakfast on Saturday August 2.
The course will be conducted in English.

Tutor

David Clarke

Unfinished Business will be directed by the legendary leading UK conceptual silversmith David Clarke who continues to “knock it out of the park!” with witty, timely comment on perceived cultural and social hierarchies. He is particularly known for his recombination of existing historic objects. These deft re-arrangements often see the objects taking on lifelike, psychological qualities. The artist has also produced a fascinating series of works in which metal is exposed to salt, sugar, and other substances. These objects are infused with humour and subversion, provoking conversations about both historical traditions and contemporary culture. His work is included in many of the finest public and private collections in the world.
