Masterclass – Thrown platers and plates with surface decorations

Welcome to this masterclass in thrown platers and plates with surface decorations with Po Wen Liu.

This workshop is designed for professionals, advanced amateurs, and students who are studying ceramics to advance wheel throwing and surface decoration techniques.

We will create platers and plates through wheelthrowing and learning surface decoration techniques such as inlay, slip trailing, sgraffito, and wax resists. will be taught in the workshop.

We will not do any firing during the workshop, but practical glazing and firing techniques will be discussed.

  • Tutor

    Po-Wen Liu is a ceramic artist and educator. He received his BFA degree in ceramics and ceramics sculpture from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and MFA degree in ceramics from Northern Illinois University.

    Po Wen is the manuscript consultant for 2002 Newbery Medal awarded book, A Single Shard, by Linda Sue Park, regarding making celadon. A Place of Reflection, by Dr. Elizabeth Perril, an article about Po Wen and his works was featured in Ceramics Monthly.

    Po Wen served as the director of The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen, and executive director of Jingdezhen International Studio from 2015 to 2018 where he facilitated international ceramics events and activities serving the international ceramics community in China and abroad. In 2016, Po Wen established the first pottery education program, a series of pottery classes based on formal ceramics curriculum, at the Pottery Workshop, Jingdezhen Education Center. Po Wen has also taught ceramic courses and workshops nationally and internationally including a recent glaze developing workshop at Leksands folkhögskola, Leksand, Sweden and a raku and raku kiln building workshop at the School of Design and Arts, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China. Po We is currently teaching at University of North Carolina at Greensboro and creating ceramics at his studio in Greensboro, NC.   • Course fee

    5 850 SEK incl. materials, lunch and two evening meals.
    8 970 SEK for 6 nights in a single room incl. materials, meals, bedlinen and cleaning.
    8 370 SEK for 6 nights in part of a double room incl. materials, meals, bedlinen and cleaning.

    Check-in from 4.00 pm the day before the workshop starts. Check-out at 11.00 am on Saturday the 13th of August. We finish the course with a common dinner the last night. Accommodation including breakfast on the 13th of August is included in the course fee. No course on the 13th of August.

     

     

  • Om Leksands folkhögskola

    Nära Leksands centrum, ute på en udde där Siljan och Dalälven möts, ligger Leksands folkhögskola inbäddad i grönska. Här bildar skolans gamla timmerbyggnader och trähus som rymmer klassrum, boenden och verkstäder en egen liten by.
