Masterclass – Gold tooling with Tracey Rowledge
Course period:
Week 31
28 July – 2 August 2025
(OBS! The course will finish after breakfast on August 2)
Learn how to gold tool a free flowing gestural image on leather, then take this knowledge for a walk!
This course is focused on developing your creative voice through the medium of gold tooling, carbon tooling, blind tooling and recessed leather onlays, enabling you to explore your ideas and visual vocabulary alongside your technical understanding and ability.
Each of the techniques will result in a different dynamic quality and energy to the image, giving you different ways to bring your images to life on your future leather-covered bindings.
As part of the course you will be provided with an A6 pre-prepared leather-covered sample board, gold leaf and BS Glaire. Two short pallets (rectangular shaped finishing tools) are included in the workshop fee for you to keep after the workshop. You will also be able to buy extra materials to use beyond the course.
Foundation skills in gold tooling will be taught, making this course suitable for all levels. You will learn through demonstration, one-to-one tuition and group discussion.
Please note that this course will not include the principles of lettering.
We welcome you to a creative and intense week!
The course will start at 9.00 on Monday July 28 and finish with evaluation and cleaning after breakfast on Saturday August 2.
The course will be conducted in English.
