Masterclass – Gold tooling on a leather-covered book

Course period
Week 32
8 – 12 August 2022 (with a common dinner last evening)

This course is focused on developing your creative voice through the medium of gold tooling, carbon tooling and blind tooling on leather, enabling you to explore your ideas and visual vocabulary alongside your technical understanding and ability.

You will need to bring a leather-covered book with you.  It could be a full, half or quarter-leather covered book, or a semi-limp leather binding (as the leather needs to be lined with paper to support the gold tooling).  If you have no experience of binding books in leather, you can either work on pre-prepared leather-covered sample boards (provided by Tracey) or you can first attend Crossed Structure binding – Back stage the 28 July – 5 August 2022 taught by Cristina Balbiano d-Aramengo, which will give you the opportunity to learn and explore the possibilties of making book structures with paper and leather, one of which you could then gold tool during this course.

You will have the opportunity to use simple, shaped hand finishing tools and you will gold tool with gold leaf and B S Glaire. Foundation skills in gold tooling will be taught, making this course suitable for all levels.  You will learn through demonstration, one-to-one tuition and group discussion.

Two simple, shaped finishing tools are included in the workshop fee for you to keep after the workshop. You will also be able to buy extra materials to use beyond the course.

Please note that this course will not include the principles of lettering.

We welcome you to a creative and intense week!
